What is a Temporary Residence Card?
The Temporary Residence Card (TRC), in Polish karta pobytu czasowego, is a plastic ID card issued by the Voivodeship Office (Urząd Wojewódzki) that proves your right to reside in Poland legally for a defined period, usually up to 3 years. It is the standard legalization path for foreigners who live in Poland for work, study, family reunification or business.
Once you receive the TRC, you can enter and leave Poland freely, sign long-term contracts, register a car, take a mortgage and travel within the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Who needs a Polish TRC?
- Foreigners employed in Poland on a work-based residence permit.
- EU Blue Card candidates in specialist roles.
- Students at Polish universities extending their stay past a visa.
- Spouses and children of Polish citizens or legal residents (family reunification).
- Self-employed foreigners and business owners.
- Anyone whose visa or previous TRC is close to expiring.
How the procedure works
- Assessment. We review your visa, employment, address and family situation to choose the right legal basis.
- Documents. We prepare the application form, gather supporting documents, arrange sworn translations and confirm your fingerprint appointment.
- Submission. The application is filed at the Voivodeship Office before your current legal stay expires — this preserves your right to stay during processing.
- Follow-up. We monitor the case, respond to every request from the office in Polish, and escalate when it stalls.
- Decision & card collection. Once approved, we book your card collection appointment and hand you the finished karta pobytu.
Common mistakes that cause refusals
- Missing the deadline — filing after your legal stay has already expired.
- Wrong legal basis chosen (e.g. work permit type doesn't match your role).
- Incomplete or outdated employment documents.
- Address registration (meldunek) mismatch.
- Health insurance gaps between contracts.
- Ignoring official letters written only in Polish.
Any of these can trigger a refusal or restart the clock. A lawyer-reviewed file avoids the vast majority of them.
How long does it take?
Officially the office decides within a few months. In practice, most TRC procedures take 8–18 months, sometimes longer in Mazowieckie. We use formal legal tools — a ponaglenie (formal urging) and a skarga na bezczynność (complaint for inaction) — to move stuck files. See our appeals and stuck cases page for more.
