Permanent Residence Card (Karta Stałego Pobytu) in Poland

A Permanent Residence Card (karta stałego pobytu) is Poland's long-term legal status for foreigners — issued for 10 years, renewable indefinitely. We handle the full application, from eligibility check to card collection.

What a Polish permanent residence card is

The Permanent Residence Card, in Polish karta stałego pobytu, is the long-term residence document that replaces repeated Temporary Residence Card renewals. It is issued for 10 years and can be renewed indefinitely; the underlying right of permanent residence itself does not expire as long as you continue to meet the residence requirement.

With a permanent card you can work in Poland without a separate work permit, run a business on the same terms as a Polish citizen, access most social benefits, and travel freely within the Schengen area.

Who is eligible

The standard route is five years of continuous, uninterrupted legal residence in Poland on the basis of temporary residence permits, work visas or similar bases. "Continuous" is defined strictly — long absences from Poland can reset the clock, so timing and documentation matter.

Shorter timelines apply in specific cases, including:

  • Spouses of Polish citizens (after 2 years of marriage and 2 years of TRC-based residence).
  • Persons of Polish origin (pochodzenie polskie).
  • Holders of the Karta Polaka who move to Poland to settle.
  • Recognized refugees and persons with subsidiary protection.
  • Children of Polish permanent residents.

Permanent vs Temporary Residence Card

A TRC is tied to a specific reason for stay — a job, a study programme, a family relationship — and usually expires within 1 to 3 years. If your situation changes, the card can be invalidated.

A permanent card is not tied to a specific reason. Once granted, you keep it even if you change employer, stop studying or leave a marriage, provided you remain a resident of Poland. It is the first stable step toward Polish citizenship — see our Polish citizenship service.

Documents we typically prepare

  • Application form and passport-quality photos.
  • Proof of continuous legal residence for the qualifying period.
  • Confirmation of stable and regular income.
  • Health insurance covering you in Poland.
  • Address registration (meldunek) and title to your accommodation.
  • Case-specific documents: marriage certificate, Karta Polaka, decision on refugee status, etc.

How our process works

  1. Eligibility audit. We check your five-year timeline day by day, including any absences from Poland, gaps between permits, and any status changes.
  2. Document preparation. We build the file, arrange sworn translations, and confirm your income and insurance documentation.
  3. Filing. The application is submitted to the Voivodeship Office before your current TRC expires, preserving your legal stay during the procedure.
  4. Follow-up. We handle all Polish correspondence, respond to requests for additional documents, and escalate with a ponaglenie if the office stalls.
  5. Card collection. Once approved, we book the collection appointment and hand over your karta stałego pobytu.

Common problems that block permanent residence

  • Gaps between residence permits — even a few days can break "continuous" residence.
  • Long absences from Poland that exceed the allowed limits.
  • Income that looks unstable on paper (short contracts, cash payments).
  • Wrong legal basis chosen during earlier TRC renewals.

If you are unsure whether your five years actually qualify, send us your timeline — we will tell you honestly whether to file now or wait.
